The Brigade Headquarters in Ft. Riley, Kansas consists of an approximately 65,000 square foot building with provisions for office, assembly, and computer rooms. The contractor, Clark/Better Built Construction, asked Blue Quality Services to perform a design review focusing specifically on the air barrier system, whole building air leakage testing, and commissioning to verify that the building and all of its systems and assemblies were design, installed, and tested to meet the United States Army Corps of Engineers project specifications.

During the design phase, our consultants reviewed the available construction documents to better understand the building enclosure system and flag any conflicts that would result in a failed air barrier test or cause problems during construction or occupancy. Our review included the air barrier system continuity, adequacy of drainage plane, and thermal insulation strategies.

Throughout construction, our field services team visited the site on multiple occasions to observe the ongoing air barrier system installation for compliance with contract specifications and to anticipate any potential problems that would result in a failed air barrier test. Our team followed up each visit with a field report, summarizing their observations and recommendations for any issues identified. This report is sent to all involved stakeholders to keep everyone abreast of construction progress and flag any issues to be resolved.

In order to maximize the benefit of our services, we traveled to the site on two separate occasions to perform a preliminary air leakage tests. Pre-testing before the official USACE Whole Building Air Leakage Test provides an early indication of the air barrier performance and allows our team to locate areas where extra detailing may be necessary. A summary report, detailing specific areas of leakage, was given to the contractor in order to pass the official test.
